CBD For Energy: Can CBD Increase Energy And Focus?

Let’s face it: life can be busy and overwhelming. From daily activities to inevitable responsibilities, it seems we’re either spread too thin or there just aren’t enough hours in the day. If you’re reading this, you probably know what it’s like to feel worn down, exhausted, and completely out of energy, especially if you're balancing multiple things at a time. But what if there was something that could help naturally boost your energy? No, I’m not talking about a caffeinated beverage. I’m talking about Cannabidiol (CBD).

If you’ve heard anything about CBD, you probably think it does the exact opposite of increasing your energy and focus. In fact, you’ve probably heard that it actually helps you feel calm and relaxed, and helps you fall and stay asleep. But according to scientific research, CBD may be the answer to helping you stay awake throughout the day.

But how can this be?

Well, in order for us to know how CBD can increase our energy and focus, we need to first look at why we lack energy and focus in the first place. So let’s look at some of the underlying reasons we struggle with lack of energy and poor focus.

Why do we lack energy and focus?

In this modern age, it’s easy to often feel like we have the weight of the world on our shoulders. In fact, we’re surrounded by questions like:

  • Am I making enough money?
  • Am I doing my best to raise my kids right?
  • Am I taking care of my body?
  • How often am I working out?
  • Do I have enough education?
  • Do I have what it takes to be successful?
  • Is my lifestyle helping or hurting the environment?

The list of questions goes on and on. However, questions like these can put us into overdrive. For example, in order for you to achieve success or make more money, you start cutting into your sleep by working more hours. You then start making poor eating choices, and begin pumping your body with empty carbs, caffeinated snacks, and feel-good treats to help keep you motivated. Before you know it, the lack of sleep and poor eating choices start putting demands on your body that ultimately deplete it of many vital nutrients. Now you’re feeling run down, even after you gulp a large latte with an extra shot of espresso.

It’s not that pursuing education, success, and a healthy lifestyle is wrong. It’s more so how we go about achieving these things that often overworks our bodies and minds. This leads to fatigue, chronic stress, inflammation, and ultimately exhaustion. So the real question is: how do we balance our daily activities and responsibilities without running our body into the ground? A loaded question, I know.

But when we take a step back and see what demands we’re putting our body through, we can then prioritize how to address everything. So now the question remains, can CBD address fatigue?

CBD and fatigue

Feeling fatigued is much more than feeling sleepy. In fact, fatigue is often defined as:

  • Feeling tired
  • Feeling weary
  • Having a lack of motivation
  • Having absolutely no energy

It’s also a sign of something more serious going on. Research shows that fatigue is often caused by unhealthy lifestyle choices, stressful environments, and other medical related issues. When we ignore the feeling of fatigue, we take the chance of developing other, more serious symptoms like chronic inflammation, which leads to unwanted aches and pains.

There are many ways to address fatigue:

  • Develop a healthy diet and lifestyle
  • Get more sleep
  • Reduce stress
  • Practica yoga
  • Embrace relaxation
  • Etc.

Another way to address fatigue is by consuming CBD.

When we consume CBD, it actually targets the underlying causes of why we struggle with fatigue in the first place. But to really understand how CBD addresses fatigue, we need to look at how it works within our body.

Not too long ago, when scientists were learning how Tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC, the psychoactive phytocannabinoid found in cannabis) interacts with the brain, they discovered a completely unique and very important physiological system within the human body, known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

This complex system is made up of receptor cells, endogenous cannabinoids, and enzymes that help communicate balance and homeostasis within the body. In fact, the ECS is responsible for regulating and balancing:

  • Appetite
  • Memory
  • Fertility
  • Mood
  • Sleep
  • Perception of pain
  • Stress
  • Inflammation
  • Immunity
  • Cognitive function
  • Behaviors
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Digestion
  • And balancing hormones

In other words, our ECS plays a key role in helping us feel healthy and normal. But when we start to feel fatigue, instead of trying to treat the symptoms of fatigue, we need to address the root cause. This is where CBD comes in.

As mentioned above, fatigue is our body's way of responding to intense physical activity, stress, and/or lack of sleep. But when we consume CBD, it actually sends signals from the receptor cells throughout the body to regulate lack of sleep, stress, etc. In fact, the whole purpose of CBD is to help the body create its own endogenous cannabinoids to go to work when things get out of balance. But the issue here is that some people struggle with an endocannabinoid deficiency that prevents them from feeling relief from a number of unwanted symptoms. According to research, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and other serious health conditions can be a result of an endocannabinoid deficiency.

Consuming CBD can help our body self-regulate and therefore promote balance. This means those who struggle with fatigue can address issues like sleep, stress, inflammation, and pain using the therapeutic properties of CBD. That’s not to say that CBD is a “cure-all”. It’s more so a tool to use when addressing issues from within the body. So when you come across products that say “CBD for sleep” or “CBD for pain”, you can rest assured that CBD isn’t necessarily curing those ailments, but rather it helps your body naturally address and regulate them.

So does this mean CBD can help you feel more energized and focused throughout the day?

Can CBD increase energy and focus?

According to scientific studies, yes, CBD can increase energy and focus... but not in the way you might think. Let’s first look at some studies. First, in a 2004 study, researchers found that when they administered only 15mg of CBD to young adults, it actually promotes wakefulness. Then, in a 2006 study, scientists wanted to test that same theory on rats. Once CBD was administered in small amounts to the rats, researchers observed a higher level of alertness within the first hour. These findings proved that CBD does contain wake-inducing properties in smaller amounts. It’s unclear how CBD promotes alertness and wakefulness, although some scientists suggest it may have to do with how CBD interacts with the dopamine system within the body.

Now let’s look at how CBD may increase our energy and focus from a different perspective. When we think of taking a supplement to increase our energy, we immediately think of things like caffeine and sugar, both of which help stimulate our body to stay awake. But these two stimulants are short lived, and often have us crashing in a matter of hours, or even minutes for some. The approach CBD takes to increase energy is by helping our body naturally address why we have decreased energy in the first place.

Studies have shown that CBD contains pretty potent anti-inflammatory properties. This may help address chronic inflammation in the body which may contribute to the feeling of fatigue, lack of energy, and poor focus. Other studies show that CBD stimulates endorphins and helps preserve our own endogenous cannabinoids like Anandamide – the “bliss molecule” that helps us feel good. This helps reduce unwanted stress and pain throughout the body. It’s also been shown that CBD helps reduce anxiety and even promotes sleep

When you combine all of these beneficial properties in one cannabinoid like CBD, you get a pretty potent tool that can address a number of issues contributing to lack of energy and poor focus. As we mentioned earlier, fatigue is the feeling of being completely unmotivated and having little to no energy, and it’s often a symptom of stress, lack of sleep, poor diet and lifestyle, or health issues that usually start with inflammation, which then turns into pain. When we address these issues, our energy and focus naturally increase. What’s more, they increase without the use of pharmaceutical drugs that come with a number of unwanted side effects.

That said, Taking CBD on a regular basis could help address these underlying issues of poor energy and focus. But  how much CBD should you take?

How much CBD should I take for energy?

While there is no conclusive evidence displaying the correct amount of CBD users should be consuming, there has been some research on the matter. According to a recent scientific review, researchers found that not only is CBD tolerated and non-intoxicating, it’s also recommended that between 1 and 50mg of CBD produces positive outcomes. This same review mentioned that even higher doses of CBD have shown to be effective as well. It all boils down to the weight of the user and the reason for consumption. For example, a child who is  smaller in weight but is diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy may still require 20mg of CBD a day. But an adult struggling with arthritic pain may also require 20mg of CBD a day. The conditions you plan on addressing with CBD have a lot to do with how much CBD you should take, as well as body weight.

Nevertheless, if you’re new to CBD and are interested in trying CBD for inflammation, or pain, or even sleep, the best way to consume CBD is to start with a low dose and gradually increase it over time. CBD is a medical substance and not all users will react to it the same way. That said, it's best to start slow and at a low dose.

Keep in mind, however, that if you’re currently on any prescription medications, it’s best to consult with a doctor before consuming CBD. This is because CBD interacts with the same liver enzymes that help break down and filter pharmaceutical drugs. Combining prescription drugs with CBD could either increase or decrease their strength. On the other hand, if your doctor gives you the go-ahead for CBD consumption, then your next task is finding the best CBD for energy.

Which CBD is best for energy

These days, there are various CBD products available:

So imagine how overwhelming it can be when it comes to finding the best CBD that can help increase energy and focus. If you’re looking for something that can take effect rather quickly, CBD oil may be your best option. But if you happen to be at work or in public and want something more subtle, CBD capsules, gummies, and edibles may be much less noticeable. It really boils down to what you prefer. The key to finding the best CBD for energy and focus is to purchase from reputable CBD companies.

Reputable CBD companies always produce high quality CBD products. They do this by providing test results on all their products, a list of nontoxic ingredients, and high quality customer service for those who need further information.

Final thoughts

When it comes to addressing low energy and poor focus, you have a lot to consider as far as treatment goes. While it’s true that over-the-counter stimulants and prescription drugs may help combat symptoms of fatigue, they rarely address the root cause of it. We know that CBD is in no way a “cure-all”, but it can definitely be a healthier and more natural option to address these unwanted symptoms. As with any medicinal substances, be sure to listen to your body. If you notice any undesirable side effects, discontinue CBD immediately. And remember to always consult with your doctor before consuming CBD.
