  • Your hair is made up of 50% carbon, 21% oxygen, 17% nitrogen, 6% hydrogen, and 5% sulphur.

  • Your hair protects your head by providing a layer of thermal insulation. It’s not the same level of insulation that fat provides for the rest of your body, but it still gives some protection. 

But while we know our hair is connected to the overall health of our body, it’s one of many parts of our body that we take for sometimes granted and assume it will always be there.

Changes in a woman’s hormones is another reason they tend to lose more hair per day than men.

3. Traction alopecia, this form of alopecia can be prevented. It’s caused by tight hairstyles such as:

  • Antidepressants (Prozac, Zoloft, and others) 

  • Beta-blockers

  • Acne medications (Accutane) 

  • Blood thinners (Warfarin, etc.) 

  • Cholesterol drugs (Lopid, etc.) 

Before discontinuing them altogether, it’s best to consult with your doctor if you notice hair loss from your medications.

5. Nutritional deficiencies can be one of the main reasons your hair is falling out. 

Many people are looking for a quick way to lose weight, and they do so by doing extreme diets, which can be very dangerous for your internal organs, systems, and hair. 

Vegan and vegetarian diets are two of the most popular diets among millennials these days, which may explain why so many people in their 30s and 40s are experiencing excessive hair loss. 

But according to research, these diets may lower protein intake, vitamins (B, D, zinc, and iron), and other essential nutrients that help promote healthy hair growth.

The more you deprive yourself of certain nutrient dense foods, the more your body struggles to make up the difference. And before you know it, you're experiencing symptoms of a deficiency.

Another study found that monkeys with higher cortisol (a stress hormone) levels had more hair loss.

Meaning, a stressful day at work isn’t the only reason your hair might be falling out. Constant hair coloring and bleaching can cause serious stress and damage to your hair follicles as well.

  • Fungal infections –– ringworm (or tinea capitis) is a fungal infection that appears on the skin or scalp, which can cause hair loss. 

  • Harsh chemicals –– many hair products such as shampoos, conditioners, hair gels, and hair masks have caused hair loss. Formaldehyde has been reported by many people to cause hair loss, yet many hair products containing this hazardous gas remain on store shelves. Steer clear from any products that contain questionable ingredients like formaldehyde.  

  • Birth control pills –– any type of medication that affects your hormones can have an affect on your overall health, including hair loss. It’s best to steer clear of birth control pills that affect or manipulate your hormone production. 

Of course, there are a few other reasons for hair loss that are beyond our control, like:
