Chairman Mao would be proud. All I know is I really enjoyed what I had (some flat noodles with certain veggies on it in a great tasting sauce. Can't remember the name) for just $12 and a big $1 Spring Roll. Lots of great sounding choices on the menu. Give them a shot if in the heart of Venice Beach. Its located near the famous Venice sign.

This place at this price is definitely a 10 out of 10! 5 stars for this restaurant and well deserved too! I orded the fried rice and when asked for my choice of protein I chose fish after the waiter's suggestion. It was FABULOUS! Out came a mountain of fried rice with a huge egg on top that I added for only $2! I could go on and on just make sure you all walk just a little bit up from the venice boardwalk and grab yourself some of this AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS food from here!!! Again 5 stars man!!

We received one of the worst kind of service here at Mao's kitchen! I still remember leaving the restaurant feeling upset! Since the restaurant is pretty close to where we live, we were excited to check it out. We got there around 2 pm (Dec 30) and since we had a big brunch, we just wanted to get something quick and yummy, and Mao's hometown sounded good. When the food came, the server did not even give us rice. We had to ask for it and ended up getting charged $3 for a small cup of rice. My husband can't use chopsticks very well so we asked for a spoon. He heard it but never brought one to us. I caught him staring at us as we were struggling picking up food from the plate with chopsticks (he was not busy and just stood there staring at customers) and felt super uncomfortable lol. He never filled up our water or asked us how we were doing, although he did that to other tables. Not sure if it was because we ordered only one dish, but I had never been treated like that in a restaurant. We left him a tip since we're not rude people, but to be honest he did not deserve it. The food was not that great. You could probably get better food and service in a mall. Definitely won't come back or recommend it to anyone.

I got the Dan Dan mien. It did not taste anything like its Chengdu counterpart. There was no nice numbing effect from the peppers and even on level 3 spice I could not even get a tingle. It was almost sweet in a way and the noodles were not nice and long like the hand pulled noodles you get in china either. Ic your in the area skip this place

Great food, big portions, affordably priced! I’m not usually a fan of Chinese food as it tends to upset my stomach from being too greasy and full of MSG. Mao’s is far from that! All of the dishes I’ve tried so far have been amazing and super fresh! They even have a secret menu that if you know the dishes you can order (general tso’s for starters!) Def worth a try! Love that it’s a BYOB as well!

Portions were much bigger than I expected and very flavorful. One dollar spring rolls??? What??? So good! Loved the chips that came before the meal. Loved the food and ambiance. Was the service five star? Probably not, but they weren't mean about it, the main guy just takes your order and brings your food when it's ready. Water stayed full. Meal had a nice pace. I'd go back!

Before Venice Beach was christened Silicon Beach there was a place were all the freaks and artists came for food, this was Maos Kitchen. Birthday parties, take out, drunken nights and hangover days were all spent eating DanDan Noodles and infamous $1.00 spring roll. Maos Kitchen is still serving up some delicious eats, the staff is real, efficient but will refuse to out up with any attitude from any guest, which keeps the place fast. I appreciate it, they always get it right. The prices are good. The food even better.

Foods good but the service is bad. I have ordered many times from this place 9 out of 10 times it's either someone rude who answered the phone or just someone who has an issue. I must have spent $1000 over the last 5 years ordering here but I've had it. Going elsewhere from now on. Food is very expensive. Average plate is $15 . Owner needs to read all of his bad reviews and listen to customers not take anger with them for expressing their personal experiences. I overlooked the bad service because the food was good but locals like me have many, many choices.

Beware, something is not right about this place. Inappropriate, threatening, & rude. I ordered food at 3pm. At 10:20PM at night I began recieving phonecalls from a private number demanding a bigger tip. The voice was threatening & I did not feel comfortable so I hung up the phone. The private number then called again and left a voicemail.

Food is good, but I've never come without some issue. Currently on the 35th minute standing at the take out podium with only an acknowledgement from the staff that we are here. The rest of the line out the door doesn't even have that luxury. We called in the order an hour ago.Maybe better through a delivery service. Those orders seem to be prioritized.
