Feedback:
I'm getting back my security deposit after three months' waiting. They sent the deposit to the address I had just moved out of for some reason, so it bounced back and has been sitting at their office since. They didn't bother calling me to tell me this. Also, I'm getting back about 25% of what I paid for the deposit, which is ridiculous. Every landlord I've had has been very happy to rent to me; I've even been offered discounts by landlords who wanted my business back. Why? Because my girlfriend and I take great care of our rentals and deep-clean them when leaving. We've always gotten our entire security deposit back minus mandatory carpet-cleaning fees. Not from C21, though; they will bill you for the upkeep they did not do while you lived there and call it "repair." I know this because my deposit went to "fixing" the shower. Let me explain that:At the last apartment, the caulking around our shower quickly fell off after a few months' use. Then black mold began growing all over it/behind it and all over the bathroom in general, despite the fact we kept it well-ventilated and did not overuse it. We worked hard to keep the mold under control with vinegar, bleach and other methods, but it was clearly deep into the walls. When we asked about it, they said they would be using money from our security deposit to re-caulk the shower and that they "did this every time someone moved out." Basically, the bathroom's got black mold in it because the shower unit's not properly sealed and needs replaced, but instead of investing in their property, they just rob their renters to replace the caulking and bleach everything so it looks okay long enough to sucker the next person in. They seal the mold in and clean the surfaces, the caulking comes off again quickly, and the cycle repeats; instead of repairing what they need to repair, they just take it out of your security deposit and make things look presentable without actually fixing anything. Our porch's paint was clearly a decade+old and mostly peeled completely off. Oh, and in the walkway into the apartment, there was a huge hole with the end of a dry-rotted beam poking through it. Ditto for the roof of our porch; it had been hastily repaired with an old split chunk of 4x6 badly toenailed into the actual support beam. Their properties are in bad disrepair, and it's clear they're just trying to milk as much money from them as possible without having to expend any money of their own. Whether this is a landlord decision or the decision of C21, it's a bad deal for renters, who subsidize C21's repairs with their security deposits so the properties can be made temporarily presentable long enough to get another sucker to rent. On several occasions, C21 sent us a notice to enter a week in advance; we waited around all day and they did not come. They couldn't be bothered to even give us a phone call and let us know we didn't need to spend the day waiting on them. Usually, when a person sets an appointment, it's common courtesy to call if something changes, but C21 was content to just leave us hanging. As long as your checks keep coming, they really can't be bothered to do a thing. Worse, when we complained about things like, you know, black mold, we were often greeted with scorn or sharp, rude explanations. "Oh it's always been like that" is not a justification, folks--you're damned lucky somebody doesn't sue the pants off of you. The only way they come away from this looking okay is if they're massively overworked and underpaid. I sympathize with anyone in a customer service job, having worked a ton myself, but my sympathy has limits. I paid a small fortune to these people for the privilege to live in a run-down apartment, have my calls ignored, be stood up for inspection days and have my security deposit robbed AND sent to the wrong address (You'd think they'd realize sending it to the address I just moved out of would probably not work, right?)I feel a bit bad posting something so negative about a local business, but seriously--stay away, college kids.
