We made the trip up to San Rafael this past week to visit Essential Sleep Boutique on 4th Street in San Rafael. We had been in the market for a new mattress. We wanted a bed that was a for real more natural bed than the mass produced beds you find at a big box store or pseudo "natural" mattress store. Having a science background I know that there are significant amounts of harmful off gassing of fire retardants and petroleum products used in the manufacture of most if not all traditional and "pseudo natural" mattresses. We weren't sure if we were in the market for natural memory foam, coil, or latex. After some research we found one store that had all these options under one roof so it was well worth the trip up to San Rafael to get an idea of all our options. We are so glad we did. We settled on a Bliss 10 inch latex mattress with two different toppers. A 3" plush for me and a 3" firm for her. It is perfect for us because the mattress firmness or plushness can be customized for each side of the bed and no crazy chemicals were used in its making. This has been very useful as my wife likes to sleep on a much firmer bed and I prefer a much softer plusher feel. We both got what we wanted and we were able to try literally all mattress types side by side without driving all over the bay area. This was a distinct advantage as trying to remember the feel of one bed versus another after a drive just was not working for us. Here we could immediately feel the difference and do a valid comparison. The owner, Diane, was very knowledgeable and did not try to "hard-sell". She helped my wife and I find a bed that matched our needs and our price point. The store has a great atmosphere, excellent selection and no pressure sales. I would highly recommend to anyone in the Bay Area considering a new mattress for themselves and/or their family to visit this San Rafael store. As an added bonus when done you can eat at Valenti Co Italian restaurant 5 minutes away which is fabulously good.
