Feedback:
Having moved back to the Peninsula in 2013, I have no idea why it's taken me so long to try 31st Union. To be fair, downtown San Mateo has an unusually high number of quality spots for this type of meal. What I mean by that is a cozy, casual and trendy spot that serves well for date nights, a comfortable meal with friends from out of town or just a meal on your own at the bar.I've been here twice and have really enjoyed their quinoa salad with fennel and carrots, fried chicken, pizza, charcuterie, to die for chocolate chip cookies and assortment of signature cocktails.Pros: Delicious food, cozy atmosphere, TVs at the bar for sports lovers, friendly staff and solid drinks.Cons: Can get busy so a rez is a good idea for prime nights.Bottom line: Quality food, friendly staff, cozy environment and good drinks which is most important.
Feedback:
Solid brunch food. I got the bacon quiche and my friend ordered the huevos rancheros. We also shared the quinoa salad. Highlights: salads were fresh, decent portion sizes, and homemade hot sauce. It wasn’t too busy, but busy enough to show it was good, and the service was pretty consistent. Only area of potential improvement would be their coffee game. If the coffee matched the food quality, place would be A+.

It was a busy Friday night and we were happy to take the last two spots at the bar. Bartender was very helpful and patient as we decided through drinks and then finally something to eat. Had me a large IPA 22oz and my spouse had the hefeweizen. We split the mac and cheese which was absolute heaven and savored every bite. We will definitely be back. Thank you.

First and foremost, make reservations. It seems everyone does and there will be a wait if you walk in. We did brunch, and had made reservations. Farm to table concept, with a nice, warm, local feel. They also have a creative menu. Loved their mocktail selection, which was great for kids - adults ordered mimosas, and were left a bit disappointed. The pours were the smallest ever! The menu is fairly basic - ricotta pancakes were good, really fluffy and good flavor. Their signature breakfast eggs, hash, toast was good as well. The smashed potatoes were nice and crunchy. I think the simple menu may help with consistency. Another must try if you're in the area.

Came here for brunch on a weekend with the BF without a reservation and were seated immediately. It was busy but not completely full. Ordered the fried chicken sandwich and the hash, which were both excellent. The coffee was also quite good. It's a relatively small space with high ceiling, lots of glass windows, clean interior, nicely designed. Locally sourced ingredients, american farm to table style dishes. The menu isn't huge, but I feel like there's enough variety everyone can find something they will like, and every dish I have had there has been pretty delicious. They also have some fun cocktails that I've tried before and they are tasty. Servers are friendly and attentive.
Feedback:
Went there for a team lunch. The service was little slow but let me tell you it was worth the wait. I had a seasonal veggie sandwich, perhaps the only vegetarian option and it was really good. Especially the housemade sauce and the aioli were too good. I would go back just for that! It came with the small bucket of fries and ketchup. They were great too. It has a nice ambience. You will have to park on the street or the parking garage close by.
Feedback:
My favorite restaurant in the mid-Peninsula at the moment. Have been here twice, was very impressed both times. Original, creative menu with fresh ingredients. Butternut squash gnocchi was excellent. Grilled cheese was out of this world. Cool ambiance too. Excited to go back, far better than anything on offer in San Carlos at the moment.
Feedback:
Fresh food and locally sourced ingredients! I had the brisket scramble - the brisket was served in luscious cubes and accompanied by a couple perfectly poached eggs and tender butternut squash. There was some unpleasant oil at the bottom of the dish, but that is probably to be expected for such a fatty meat. Good, plentiful coffee and attentive service outweigh the sparse seating and mildly haphazard plating (especially for the prices, omg!) at this soon-to-be (for us) San Mateo brunch standby.
Feedback:
Last week daughter and we needed a bite while running errands midday. We were awfully glad we popped into 31st Union. Self-proclaimed "locovore" cuisine is provided here. Finding seating at one end of a social table, we decided on food, then placed orders with the barman. One of us had a yummy quinoa and arugula salad with poached chicken. Two of us shared the same salad (no chicken) and an excellent burger on a brioche bun. We asked for chips in place of fries and received extra nicely crafted ones to go with the very delicious sandwich. While our food orders were fairly simple, we were impressed with the care and quality of everything. Service was prompt although the initial order had to be made up at the small bar during midday hours.
Feedback:
Competent and satisfactory, but nothing to be excited about. Our weekday lunches were fine; largely ungarnished, served by well- meaning people. We left full, but not in anyway delighted. If someone insisted on meeting me there in the future, I might not protest, but I wouldn't select it myself.
