Having moved back to the Peninsula in 2013, I have no idea why it's taken me so long to try 31st Union.To be fair, downtown San Mateo has an unusually high number of quality spots for this type of meal. What I mean by that is a cozy, casual and trendy spot that serves well for date nights, a comfortable meal with friends from out of town or just a meal on your own at the bar.I've been here twice and have really enjoyed their quinoa salad with fennel and carrots, fried chicken, pizza, charcuterie, to die for chocolate chip cookies and assortment of signature cocktails.Pros: Delicious food, cozy atmosphere, TVs at the bar for sports lovers, friendly staff and solid drinks.Cons: Can get busy so a rez is a good idea for prime nights.Bottom line: Quality food, friendly staff, cozy environment and good drinks which is most important.
